Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Lipstick Review With Photos

Only a select few formulas and shades have surpassed trends and become iconic in their own right — and one such shade is Charlotte Tilbury's Pillow Talk. I wore the lipstick for a recent evening of dinner and drinks and was pleasantly surprised by how well it held up. After finishing dinner, I had lost only a bit of color. I reapplied for moisture and longevity more than necessity. I did not reapply beyond that and, after hours of drinking, I posed for a selfie and my lip color was still in pretty great shape.

I have a tiny sample size of Pillow Talk, so perhaps there's a difference between the sample and the full size. I was so excited to get the sample, but the color is not at all what I expected. If I apply a light layer, I'd say it looks like a warm pink.

But, the first coat is pigmented enough that you won’t need a second. Difficult to sharpen to a fine point due to the formula and the plastic (not wood) encasing. I can only get it to a blunt point and it keeps sliding out of the encasing and falling out. Not quite the holy grail lipliner I was hoping for! But, it serves its purpose and I do wear it from time to time.

Enter Pillow Talk Medium, the warm berry-pink alternative that delivers that romantic, nude-pink effect on those with tan and dark skin tones. Dries down to an opaque waterproof finish very quickly, which means you need to get it right the first time. Not buildable because it’s impossible to add a second coat once it dries.

After trying Charlotte Tilbury's Matte Revolution lipstick in Pillow Talk and pairing it with the Lip Cheat liner, I can totally see why these products are cult favorites. They give the effect of fuller, plumper lips and the natural rosy hue is easy to dress up or down. The lip kit has become my new go-to, especially since it holds up against eating and drinking, and I can't wait to try the Medium and Intense shades to expand my lineup. The texture and wear are great, as is the packaging.

With that perfect shade in hand, application should be a breeze. You can simply swipe it on or take expert cues from Lavone. First, she dabs on a concealer to neutralize any blue, yellow, green, or purple undertones in the lips. "This way I have an even canvas to work with," Lavone explains. "Then, I draw on a lip liner that complements the skin tone, and blend it into the lip before applying lipstick." Matte Revolution in Pillow Talk enhances the natural hue of your lips so is unique to your skin tone and natural lip color.

My lips chap easily, so drying mattes often look flaky on me. However, I was recently given the opportunity to test these beloved products — if it's good enough for Britney, it should be good enough for me, right?! — and now I finally know what all the hype is about. My Pillow Talk lipsticks launched to give EVERYONE what I call ‘the most beautiful lips of their life’. The moisturising matte formula smooths and shapes the lips of your dreams to perfect every pout. It’s formulated for EVERYONE at EVERY AGE and ANY SKIN TONE.

It's gone viral on social media plenty of times throughout the years, and the brand even claims that one Matte Revolution Pillow Talk lipstick is sold every two minutes. In fact, Charlotte Tilbury created a whole collection dedicated to this romantic, soft-glam shade. To truly see if the Pillow Talk shades are universally flattering, we tested out the wear, formulation, and look of the iconic Pillow Talk lipstick shades on six different skin tones. Some of us opted to try out the original color, while others wanted to give Pillow Talk Medium a whirl.

The color was consistent with the standalone version I have of this shade. It had good pigmentation with a soft, lightly waxy texture that applied fairly well to bare skin for all-over color application and was even easier to use strictly as a liner. It stayed on well for over six hours and was non-drying. Charlotte Tilbury's Pillow Talk is supposed to be universally flattering. However, those with dark skin tones noticed they were not getting that same rosy nude, "my lips but better" look.

If I apply it a little more heavily, it comes out as almost a bright coral. Not only is it not "pink," it's not a "nude," either. It does give a bit of a smoothing effect on my lips. It has a slight slip when first applied but seems to dry out a bit during wear.

I personally like the scent but YMMV.The 3 stars is more for the confusion on shade description. Create the illusion of fuller, wider lips with my Matte Revolution – for lips that look lit from within. It’s a trick I use all the time on photo shoots, using lighting trickery, pigments and powders, and have been working for years to re-create this effect in the slick of 1 lipstick. Now everyone can create this full, matte lip effect in a long-lasting, buildable, hydrating formula – it’s the matte lipstick of the future! Exclusively enriched with Lipstick Tree extract which protects lips and is a natural anti-oxidant, and Orchid Extract which soothes and hydrates for a soft, buildable cashmere finish. Available in 10 modern-matte shades for all skin tones – 1 for each of my signature looks.

We even included a few tips and tricks we used to make the Pillow Talk shades suitable for our skin tones and undertones. With soft pinks especially, taking your specific skin tone into account is incredibly important. Otherwise, you might end with a lip that's way lighter or darker than you wanted, and it could quickly wash you out and make your radiant skin suddenly look dull. The selection process thankfully doesn't have to be too difficult. "When I look at depth and undertones for a soft-toned, petal pink lipstick, I start by looking at the natural color of the lips," bi-coastal makeup artist Lavonne tells Allure. Pillow Talk is a medium-dark pink with warm undertones and a matte finish.

After a day of wear I feel that my lips could use a balm but not completely parched either. It lasts through sipping and light snacks but is gone after an actual meal. It does last longer with a lip liner in a similar shade underneath. The sample lipstick has a light sweet vanilla scent that is very reminiscent of the MAC lipstick vanilla scent.

I need true autumn lipstick colours and this isn't it.This is very drying and emphasises all my lines. After priming my lips with a touch of Aquaphor, I applied the Matte Revolution lipstick. The formula felt creamy and nourishing compared to most other mattes I've tried thanks to conditioning vitamin E that gives it softness and a silkier texture. It glided on easily and didn't drag my lips like mattes tend to. From a bold red lip to an ideal nude, the right lipstick can pull a look together like no other. And with the near-endless amount of options to choose from, it's no surprise we're always on the hunt for the next best lipsticks.
